About the Visual FoxPro Developer User Group
The ADD Visual FoxPro User Group is one of the oldest application developer communities in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Many of the members of this User Group have been business system developers for almost two decades.  While the growth of the other ADD SIGs can for the most part be credited to developers who have migrated into more recent tools and databases from the Foxpro community, members of this User Group continue to develop new applications with current versions, as well as maintain and extend legacy systems still running in older versions of this incredibly versatile and rich object oriented RAD data-centric platform.  Peer support and developer interactive sessions, including presentations in all areas of development such as desktop, web, application development best practices and integration with third party toolsets and frameworks, have kept these professionals meeting regularly for over twenty-five years.

Our next meeting will be held at:
Santa Clara University
500 El Camino Real

Santa Clara, CA 95053
Lucas Hall, Room 106

General Agenda :

06:30 to 07:00 - Introductions, discussion, networking
07:00 to 09:30 - Presentation and Q&A (w/ break)
09:30 to 10:00 - Informal discussion and networking

June 2010 Visual FoxPro Developer Meeting - .NET Project -

Please note: The location for this meeting is being changed!

Thursday, June 24th at: Alameda Health Care, 1000 San Leandro Blvd, 3rd Floor Room 325
San Leandro, CA 94577

- 6:30pm to 9:30pm

June brings us the beginning of Summer and the official kickoff of our .NET Project as well!  In our last .NET meeting we covered the basic scope of the project and what we hoped to eventually achieve.  So now we know that we are building a Bug Tracking system, using C# in Visual Studio 2008.

In this meeting we will actually break ground, hopefully getting everyone off the launch pad at the same time!  We will start building the project on a centralized server using an isolated development model, with multiple projects in a single solution.   As much as possible we will adhere to Best Practices for building a multi-developer .NET project, and do our best to support all skill levels so that everyone gets something meaningful from the project.  Starting in June, we will have a project outline established along with a list of the first things we need to accomplish.  Participants in the project will be given a task to complete (commensurate with their skill level), to be integrated into the project as it is completed. At  future meetings that focus on this project we'll review the status of various elements, discussing both successes and issues.

Rest assured that we are not abandoning FoxPro!  Just taking steps to help us all extend our skill sets and (I am sure) eventually working on ways to use VFP and .NET together. This is a big undertaking but doable with a little patience and some prep work.

There are a few prerequisites for those that wish to participate in this project:

1) You need to have Visual Studio 2008 on the system your own system.  VS2008 Express is free and available from Microsoft (URL to follow here).
2) You will need SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008 on yoru system.  Both are available in an express version from Microsoft (URL to follow here).
3) A willingness to learn!

That's it!  Of course, you can install VS and SQL Server after the meeting but if you are new to the platform it might be good to get it installed and at least poke around a little.  Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops and play along as the project progresses.

Door prizes for this meeting include some hardware, some software and tech books galore.  Prizes will be awarded at the break and you must be present to win.  Refreshments will be provided, sponsored by Symmetry Corporation. When you RSVP for this meeting, please include your selection for a 6" sandwich or salad from Subway (check out Subway's website at www.subway.com for available menu items). We will have the usual assortments of chips and drinks available.

We are using Meetup for RSVP's to this meeting. Go to www.meetup.com/baaddvfp and join the BAADD VFP Deveoper Group.  You'll automatically receive updates about the meeting, and you can RSVP there (you may also RSVP without joining th group, but live a little - join the group!).
